The terrace season is officially about four months long — the stretch where an evening outside needs no planning. Unofficially, with the right setup, it runs from early March to late November, and diehards keep a January vin chaud tradition alive out there. The recipe has three parts: a closed roof over your head, wind protection at your back, and heat you can feel. Why heating outdoors is a different problem
Indoors, heating means warming the air and keeping it: insulation does most of the work. Outdoors there is nothing to keep — warm air rises, drifts and is simply gone. Any strategy based on warming air (gas mushroom heaters, fan heaters, fire bowls as anything but ambiance) is pouring energy into the sky. The evenings feel warm within a metre of the source and cold everywhere else, and the fuel bill knows it.
Infrared heaters solve the actual problem. They work like the sun: radiant energy passes through the air almost without warming it and converts to heat when it lands on people, chairs, tables, skin. You feel it within seconds of switch-on — that immediate sun-on-your-face warmth — and nothing was wasted pre-heating a cubic kilometre of night air.
Why infrared wins on every axis

- Maintenance-free. No bottles to swap, no burners to clean. It hangs there and works, year after year.
The right unit: 2500 W, mounted in the frame

Placement that actually warms
- Aim at people, not the floor. Infrared warms what it can see. Angle the unit so its throw crosses the group at seated-torso height — warm shoulders and hands are what "warm evening" means to a human.
- Respect the distance band. Roughly seven to ten feet from seating is the sweet spot: close enough for full effect, far enough for even spread. Frame-mounting at the roof edge lands naturally in this band.
- Corners beat centres for two-sided groups. If the sofa faces the table, a unit angled from the corner covers both rather than roasting one and missing the other.
The multiplier: close the room first
Here is the step that separates "bearable" from "we forgot it was October": heat works dramatically better in a stilled room. With the louvers closed above and a side screen down on the wind side, air movement under the pergola nearly stops — and still air is what lets radiant warmth accumulate in surfaces and skin instead of being wiped away by every gust. A 2500 W unit at full power draws 2.5 kWh per hour — at typical household electricity prices, roughly 75 cents to a euro per hour, and you rarely run full power all evening: spring and autumn evenings usually want the chill taken off, not maximum output, and switching off during the indoor dessert run costs nothing to resume. A long, warm three-hour evening lands around the price of one hot chocolate at a café. The gas mushroom it replaces burns several euros of bottle gas for a worse result.
Practical questions
- Wiring? Standard 230 V. On an electric Equa the supply is already at the pergola; on a manual Piano, plan the same modest connection an electrician sorts in a visit.
