Installing Your Pergola: What to Expect, Step by Step

The pergolas we sell are engineered for DIY assembly — that is a design decision, not a compromise. Pre-assembled components, numbered hardware, practical louver connectors and clear English instructions mean a capable pair of hands builds one in a morning to a day. But "DIY-friendly" lands better with a realistic picture of the day, so here it is: the preparation that matters, what arrives on the truck, the build phase by phase, honest timings per model, and the handful of mistakes worth avoiding. Read this once and delivery day becomes pleasantly boring.

Before anything: the base decides the project

The single most important preparation happens before the pergola exists in your garden: the surface it will stand on. The posts must be bolted to a stable, level base — this anchoring is where the 110 km/h wind rating comes from, and it is not optional. Three bases work:

  • A concrete foundation — poured points or a slab under the post positions; the gold standard, invisible under any finish.
  • Heavy natural-stone or concrete terrace tiles — thick, properly bedded tiles take the anchors directly; thin decorative tiles on sand do not.
  • A solid wooden deck — bolted through into the substructure, not just the deck boards.

Grass, gravel and loose pavers are not mounting surfaces. Check level across the whole footprint with a spirit level and a straight edge: a base that is off by centimetres makes every subsequent step harder and shows in the roofline forever. Wall-mounted versions add one check: the facade must be solid at mounting height (brick, concrete, or anchored timber frame), and you'll want a hammer drill, proper anchors and a cable/pipe detector before making holes in your house.

Delivery day

A pergola arrives as freight on a pallet — long, heavy packages, professionally wrapped. Three practical notes:

  • Plan the path. Measure the route to the garden for the longest package (the beams for your size); through-the-house deliveries appreciate cardboard on the floor.
  • Have a second person for carrying — weight is manageable, length is awkward alone.
  • Check before signing. Count packages against the delivery note and note any visible transport damage on the carrier's slip. Damaged components are replaced free — a photo to our support settles it fastest. This two-minute habit converts a rare annoyance into a routine swap.

Unpack near the build site, sort hardware by its numbering, and lay the louvers somewhere they can't be stepped on. Tools: two sturdy stepladders, a good cordless drill, spirit level, tape, and the wrench sizes named in the manual. Nothing exotic.

The build, phase by phase

  • Phase 1 — the frame. Posts and beams bolt together into the main rectangle via engineered corner connectors, square is checked by measuring diagonals, and the posts are anchored to your prepared base. This is the two-person heart of the build — nothing is difficult, but beams are long and a second pair of hands is the difference between assembly and wrestling. Wall-mounted versions start with the wall profile, which sets the height and level for everything after.
  • Phase 2 — the louvers. The slats mount into the roof frame one by one with practical connectors. Repetitive, oddly satisfying work that accelerates as you learn the motion — the first louver takes ten minutes, the last takes two, and the roof visibly becomes a roof.
  • Phase 3 — mechanism and finish. The crank system (Piano) or motor linkage (Equa) is connected and the roof is run through its full travel; you're checking for smooth, even motion and full closure. Caps, trims and the final once-over finish the job.

Honest timings

  • Pergola Piano (manual): two experienced DIYers typically finish a standard size in 3 to 5 hours — and because there is nothing to wire, the pergola is fully usable the moment the mechanism is tested. Morning build, afternoon coffee under it.
  • Equa / Equa (electric): plan a full day with three people — the larger formats mean longer beams and more louvers, and the motor linkage deserves unhurried attention. Add a short electrician visit (usually under an hour) to connect the 230 V supply for motor and LED; the pergola works mechanically before that visit, so scheduling is flexible.

First-timers: add a relaxed 50% to the numbers and the day stays enjoyable. The instructions assume no prior pergola experience.

Mistakes worth avoiding (all cheap to prevent)

  • Building on an unlevel base "to fix later" — later never gets easier. Level first.
  • Skipping the diagonal measurement — a frame square to the eye can be centimetres out; the louvers will tell you, unkindly, at phase 2.
  • Fully tightening every bolt on first pass — snug first, square, then tighten, as the manual sequences it.
  • Drilling the facade without detecting — thirty seconds with a detector versus a very bad afternoon with a water pipe.
  • Solo beam-lifting heroics — borrow the second person; the build is a pleasant shared project and an awful solo one.
